SPECTACULAR VISIONS OF JEWELRY
Jewelry, art and photography converge into DRAFTspace COMPLETE PARTS an installation showcase featuring select designers and artists from around the world to unveil their creations. The meticulously curated pieces on show will be mirrored by visually engaging photographs of the jewelry in a uniquely stylized presentation that enhances and even alters their beauty. From varying angles to spatial distances of how the images are juxtaposed with the jewelry, the exhibition seeks to encourage discourses on duality, how much truth lies between the original and its simulacrum, while challenging the viewer’s conventional perceptions of reality versus imagery, and objectification versus adornment. The show also explores stylistic polarities and blending of crafted artisanal contemporary jewelry in new forms and materials on the one hand, and fine couture jewelry with classical precious gemstones on the other.
As part of DRAFTspace’s dedication to helping develop talents, sections of the exhibition will feature select pieces from the 2015 graduating class of The Fashion Institute of Technology’s Jewelry Department as well as the Art Start Portrait Project, the non-profit program of providing disadvantaged kids with creative programs to supplement artistic and personal development. A portion of sales generated during the event run will be donated to the Art Start program.
The images are by documentary photographer Natalie Conn who specializes in portraiture and multi-media production and whose work has been published in several publications including The Boston Globe and The Christian Science Monitor.
